About the Product

Magenta Sprite is a hybrid spring phlox with magenta-pink star-shaped flowers on a low, mounding plant. It stays in a neat clump instead of spreading aggressively like standard creeping phlox.

It blooms about a week later than creeping phlox, which helps stretch spring color into late spring. At 6 to 8 inches tall, it suits edging, rock gardens and the front of the border, and it tolerates very light shade. Butterflies and bees visit the flowers.

What it looks like

Star-shaped flowers about 3/4 inch across have five notched petals in vivid magenta pink, crowded over the top of the plant. The leaves are small, narrow and green on short stems. The plant forms a low, compact mound about 6 to 8 inches tall and 18 to 22 inches wide. At peak bloom the mound is covered in bright magenta stars.

Growing it with lavender

Creeping phlox likes the same sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its magenta carpet makes a neat spring edging along lavender beds, blooming weeks before the lavender does.

Care

Grow in full sun, or very light shade, in lean to average, well-drained soil; it handles dry spells once established. Hardy in zones 3-8. It stays in a neat mound rather than running, and a light trim after bloom keeps it compact.

How to grow Magenta Sprite

Phlox · Phlox

Two very different plants: garden phlox (P. paniculata) is a tall summer bloomer that wants sun, rich moist soil and good air flow; creeping phlox (P. subulata) is a spring groundcover for sun and lean, well-drained soil.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots or plant out after hardening off. Creeping phlox plugs can go straight into the ground 12 inches apart to knit into a mat. Keep moist until rooted.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug or with the bare-root crown just at soil level.

Spacing

Garden phlox 18–24 inches for air flow; creeping phlox 12–18 inches for a mat.

Soil

Garden phlox: rich, moist loam. Creeping phlox: sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil. · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost for garden phlox. For creeping phlox, add grit to heavy clay or plant on slopes and walls so it never stays wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Garden phlox in shade gets more mildew and fewer flowers; creeping phlox blooms best in full sun.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Creeping phlox stays evergreen and flowers in early to mid-spring. Garden phlox emerges from the crown in mid-spring as reddish shoots and blooms in mid to late summer.
