About the Product

Mango Tango is a shorter hummingbird mint with flowers that blend light peach and dusky orange above dusky rose calyxes, so the plant reads as a warm red-orange from a distance. Blooms cover most of the plant from midsummer into early fall.

Its compact size, 16 to 18 inches tall, makes it a good choice for containers, edging and the front of a dry, sunny border. The medium green leaves are aromatic, and the flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees while deer usually leave it alone.

What it looks like

Short, dense spikes 2 to 4 inches long of small tubular flowers in light peach shading to dusky orange, each held in a dusky rose calyx, for an overall red-orange effect. Flower spikes cover the top three quarters of the plant. Leaves are medium green, small, oval and toothed, aromatic. The plant is compact and upright, 16 to 18 inches tall and 14 to 16 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a tight, colorful bouquet of peach, orange and rose spikes.

Growing it with lavender

Mango Tango enjoys the same sunny, lean, well-drained ground as lavender, and its peach and red-orange spikes pair warmly with lavender's cool purple at the front of a border.

Care

Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.

How to grow Mango Tango

Hummingbird Mint / Anise Hyssop · Agastache

Give it full sun and lean, fast-draining soil. It handles heat and drought well but dies in soggy winter soil, so drainage matters more than anything else.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring after frost is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid late-fall planting in cold zones; hummingbird mints need a full season to root in.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring after frost is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid late-fall planting in cold zones; hummingbird mints need a full season to root in.

How deep

Set the crown exactly level with the soil surface, never buried. Plant on a slight mound in heavier soil.

Spacing

18–24" apart, depending on variety size.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loamy; avoid heavy, wet clay · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: In clay, plant on a mound or raised bed and mix in grit or fine gravel. Skip heavy compost and manure; rich, wet soil shortens its life. Don't mulch tight against the crown.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates a few hours of light shade, with fewer flowers).

6+ hours of direct sun keeps stems sturdy and blooming. In shade plants flop and bloom less.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

One of the later perennials to wake up. Expect new shoots from the base in mid- to late spring, often after other perennials are well up. Old stems may look dead; look low at the crown for green shoots before giving up.
