About the Product

Marquee Moon raises the bar for near-white daylilies with lavish ruffling that gives the blooms an elegant look. The large 5 to 5½-inch fragrant flowers are cream, with a yellow throat that glows outward and a yellow edge around each rounded petal.

On cloudy days you may notice a hint of peach, and in sun a fine sparkle shows on the petals. It blooms in late July.

What it looks like

Large, rounded flowers 5 to 5½ inches across in soft cream with extravagantly ruffled edges, a yellow throat that fades outward onto the petals and a thin yellow picotee along each petal, with a diamond-dust sparkle. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 24 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom elegant cream flowers stand out clearly against the green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Its creamy, ruffled flowers brighten a lavender planting and share its need for sun and good drainage.

Care

Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring or late summer to early fall, at least 4–6 weeks before frost.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

You'll get one or more 'fans' of trimmed leaves on a crown with thick, tuberous roots. Soak roots for a few hours, then spread them over a mound of soil in the hole and cover so the crown sits no more than 1 inch deep.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Green shoots break through in early to mid spring. Evergreen types may look mushy after winter but regrow. Bloom varies by variety, from early summer to late summer.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or late summer to early fall, at least 4–6 weeks before frost.

How deep

Set the crown, where the leaves meet the roots, no more than 1 inch below the soil surface. Planting deeper reduces bloom.

Spacing

18–24 inches.

Soil

Most soils, from sand to clay · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Work compost into heavy clay or very sandy soil before planting.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Shade cuts down flowers. Dark reds and purples can like light afternoon shade.
