About the Product

Mini Pinks is a shorter delphinium in bright pink shades, selected for compact size and sturdy stems. At 2.5 to 3 feet tall, it holds up longer without staking than taller types.

It brings the classic spire shape to smaller gardens and the middle of the border, blooming in early summer with a second round in late summer and fall when spent spikes are cut back.

What it looks like

An upright clump of basal foliage about 18 to 24 inches wide with tall, stout flower stems rising 2.5 to 3 feet tall. Leaves are large, deeply lobed and cut into pointed segments, medium green, 4 to 8 inches across, forming a leafy base. The spikes are densely packed with florets about 1.5 to 2 inches across in bright pink shades, from rose to clear pink, each with a small pale or darker central tuft. At peak bloom the plant is a column of densely packed flowers standing well above the foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Delphinium wants richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so grow it in a nearby border where its pink spires can rise behind lavender without sharing the same lean, dry bed.

Care

Plant in full sun to light part shade in rich, well-drained soil and water regularly; delphiniums prefer cool summers and dislike soggy winter soil. Hardy in zones 3-7. The shorter stems usually stand on their own, though staking helps in windy spots. Cut spent spikes back to the leaves after the first bloom to encourage a second round of flowers in late summer and fall.

How to grow Mini Pinks

Delphinium · Delphinium

Delphiniums want cool summers, full sun, rich well-drained soil and steady moisture. They love northern gardens like Michigan's; in hot, humid regions they are often short-lived.

Hardy in zones 3a–7b

Spring after hard frost, or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots and grow on in a cool, bright spot until well rooted, then harden off and plant. Keep slugs away from the tender young growth.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost, or early fall.

How deep

Keep the crown at soil level; burying it invites rot.

Spacing

18–24 inches apart for compact varieties, 2–3 feet for tall types.

Soil

Rich, fertile loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Dig in compost generously. In heavy clay, raise the bed or loosen deeply so the crown doesn't rot in winter.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light afternoon shade in hot areas).

Shelter from strong wind; tall spikes snap easily.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

New leafy shoots appear from the crown in early spring, often early compared to other perennials. Young plants may bloom lightly the first year.
