Niagara Falls is an unusually wide switch grass, with arching, powder-blue foliage that looks more like a miscanthus than a typical upright switch grass. It fills space quickly and gracefully.
In fall, sprays of cream seed heads pack the top of the plant. It reaches about 4 feet tall and wide, stays standing through winter and provides cover for birds, making it useful for masses, screens and large containers.
What it looks like
Narrow powder-blue leaves about ½ inch wide rise and then arch outward, forming a broad, rounded, fountain-like clump about 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. In late summer and fall, airy sprays of tiny cream-colored flowers and seed heads fill the top of the plant. In fall the foliage turns golden to tan. At peak the plant is a wide, cascading mound of powder blue topped with a cream haze.
Growing it with lavender
Niagara Falls shares lavender's need for full sun, and its powder-blue arching leaves blend beautifully with lavender's gray-green mounds.
Care
Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.
