Night Owl is a dramatic, nearly black mangave. Its dark color comes from dense, heavy spotting across the leaves, and the color deepens in full sun.
The wide leaves gently ripple along their edges to show off small marginal spines, and the plant forms a low, spreading rosette about 6 to 8 inches tall. It is a bold dark accent for containers and sunny rock gardens.
What it looks like
Wide, thick, lance-shaped leaves about 2 inches across are so densely covered in dark purple-black spots that they look nearly black, with hints of olive green showing through. The leaf edges undulate gently, displaying small dark marginal spines, and each leaf ends in a short tip spine. The leaves form a low, open, arching rosette 6 to 8 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. The rosette looks like a dark, rippled star with a velvety finish.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
