About the Product

Noble Native is a variegated form of a woodland sedge native to eastern North America. Its narrow, arching blue-green leaves are striped with creamy white, and the variegation shows best on the fresh spring growth.

It stays compact, 6 to 12 inches tall, and works nicely along the front of a shady border or lining a woodland path. It is deer resistant, largely trouble free and needs very little care.

What it looks like

Narrow, arching leaves about ¼ to ⅜ inch wide are soft blue-green with creamy white stripes along the edges, brightest on new spring growth. The leaves radiate from the center to form a compact, low, rounded tuft 6 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide. Small, slender flower spikes appear briefly in mid-spring. The plant looks like a tidy, cool-toned fountain of blue-green and cream at the front of a bed.

Growing it with lavender

Noble Native prefers shade and moist, rich soil, so give it a place along a shaded path or woodland edge rather than in the sunny lavender beds.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich soil kept evenly moist. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Cut back old foliage in late winter to make room for fresh spring leaves.

How to grow Noble Native

Sedge · Carex laxiculmis

Sedges are grassy clumps for part shade and moist soil. Japanese types (C. oshimensis, C. morrowii) are evergreen, the native woodland type (C. laxiculmis) handles dry shade, and Bowles' Golden (C. elata) loves wet soil.

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly in spring or fall, or pot up into 4-inch pots to grow on. Keep moist and out of hot sun until new growth shows.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, with the base of the leaves at soil level.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for most; up to 24 inches for Bowles' Golden.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to hold moisture. C. elata will grow in boggy soil or pond edges; others need moisture but not standing water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Gold-leaved types like Bowles' Golden color best with some sun if kept wet; hot afternoon sun scorches Japanese sedges.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Japanese sedges stay evergreen and may look tattered after winter; new blades push up in spring. C. elata dies back and re-sprouts in mid-spring.
