October Sky is a mid-sized native switch grass with an elegant, upright shape and blue-green leaves. In late summer and early fall it is topped with bright rosy purple seed heads that give a lovely fall display.
It grows about 4½ to 5 feet tall and holds its shape well late in the season without opening up or collapsing. It tolerates wind, salt and drought and works well as a focal point, in masses or for erosion control.
What it looks like
Narrow blue-green leaves about ½ inch wide form an upright, elegant clump 54 to 60 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide. In late summer and early fall, airy, open panicles of tiny flowers and seeds rise above the leaves in a rosy purple haze. In fall the foliage turns golden tan while the seed heads fade to tan. At peak the plant is a slim blue-green column wrapped in a soft purple cloud.
Growing it with lavender
October Sky likes the same full sun as lavender, and its rosy purple seed heads echo lavender's purple tones late in the season.
Care
Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.
