About the Product

Ostrich fern is one of the largest and best-loved garden ferns, with bold green fronds shaped like tall feather plumes. In good conditions the spring fronds can reach 5 to 6 feet, forming a dramatic vase-shaped clump.

It is native to wet woods and streambanks and spreads quickly by underground runners, so it is perfect for filling moist, shady areas, naturalizing along a creek or covering a large bed. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and fronds turn bronze-gold in fall.

What it looks like

Large, feather-shaped green fronds are widest near the top and taper down to a short bare stem, like an ostrich plume. The spring fronds rise in a tight, upright vase shape and arch outward at the tips, reaching 3 to 6 feet tall. Later a shorter set of stiff, dark brown, bead-like fertile fronds appears in the center. Each clump spreads 3 to 4 feet wide and runners form colonies of many vases. In early summer a planting looks like a sea of tall green plumes.

Growing it with lavender

Ostrich fern wants damp soil and shade, the opposite of lavender, so plant it in a low, moist area, along a stream or in a shaded bed away from the lavender.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade but needs consistently moist to wet soil; in sun it must never dry out. Hardy in zones 3 to 7. It spreads fast by runners, so give it room or dig out extras in spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–7b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72- or 20-cell plugs into 4 in pots in shade, or plant directly into moist soil. Never let plugs dry out.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level with the bud in the center just at the surface; don't bury the growing point.

Spacing

2-3 ft apart; it will fill in.

Soil

Rich, moist loam or heavy soil · pH 5.0–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost or leaf mold and mulch to keep it moist. It handles occasional wet spots well; dry, sandy soil is the problem.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; sun only with cool temps and steady moisture).

In sun or dry soil, fronds brown by midsummer.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fiddleheads appear in mid to late spring. Stiff brown fertile fronds from last year may stand in the center; that's normal.
