About the Product

Paint the Town Red is a heat-tolerant dianthus with small, single, deep magenta red flowers with toothed petals. At peak bloom the flowers completely cover the plant.

The semi-evergreen foliage stays attractive most of the year, and the clove-scented flowers are fine for small bouquets. The main flush comes in early summer; shear the plant lightly afterward and it will flower again in early fall. It is right at home edging a sunny border, in rock gardens and in mixed containers.

What it looks like

A low, dense mound about 6 to 8 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of grassy foliage. Leaves are narrow, linear and pointed, 1 to 3 inches long, glaucous blue with a smooth, waxy surface. Single flowers three-quarters to 1 inch across have five serrated petals in deep magenta red. Flowers are held on short, straight stems a few inches above the leaves. At peak bloom the foliage mound is almost hidden under a dense layer of flowers.

Growing it with lavender

It thrives in lavender's sunny, well-drained conditions, and its deep red flowers make a bold, low contrast along the front of a lavender bed.

Care

Plant in full sun to light part shade in average, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells and dislikes wet, heavy soil, especially in winter. Hardy in zones 4-9. Shear the plant back lightly after the early-summer flush to encourage a second round of flowers in early fall.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring after hard frost, or late summer to early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost, or late summer to early fall.

How deep

Set the crown exactly level with the soil; never bury the stems.

Spacing

8–12 inches for most border pinks.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loam · pH 6.5–8.0

Fix-it tip: Wet crowns rot. Mix grit or pea gravel into clay, plant on a slight mound, and use gravel mulch, not bark. Pinks prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil; add lime only if a soil test shows acid soil.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light afternoon shade in hot climates).

Less than 6 hours of sun means sparse blooms and open, floppy mats.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Most keep blue-gray or green evergreen tufts through winter, so they never look fully dormant. Some leaves may look brown in early spring; new growth starts as soon as soil thaws. Main bloom is late spring to early summer.
