Permanent Wave is a large, silver mangave with massive, paddle-shaped leaves that can exceed 6 inches wide at maturity. Its leaf edges ripple gently and are lined with cinnamon-colored spines that stand out against the waxy silver color.
It resembles a silver whale's tongue agave but grows much faster, reaching about 1½ feet tall and up to 3 feet wide. It makes a commanding specimen in a large container.
What it looks like
Broad, thick, paddle-shaped leaves over 6 inches wide at maturity are a waxy, powdery silver with a slight blue cast. The margins ripple in gentle waves and are lined with small cinnamon-brown teeth, and each leaf ends in a cinnamon tip spine. The leaves form a broad, open, symmetrical rosette 18 to 20 inches tall and 32 to 36 inches wide. The overall look is a large, sculptural silver rosette outlined in warm brown.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zone 11.
