About the Product

Pictum is the classic Japanese painted fern and one of the most colorful ferns you can grow. Its silvery gray fronds blush dusty purple toward the center and are set off by wine-red stems and veins.

It stays low, about 12 to 18 inches tall, and slowly spreads into a soft, layered patch. It brightens shady beds, edges woodland paths and mixes well with hostas and coral bells in shady containers.

What it looks like

Triangular, finely divided fronds 12 to 18 inches long are silvery gray with a wash of dusty purple toward the midrib. Stems and veins are a purplish red that shows through the silver. The fronds arch outward and lie in soft, horizontal layers, forming a low, mounded clump 12 to 18 inches tall and about 24 inches wide. In late spring and summer the plant looks like a silver and plum-toned mound that glows in shade.

Growing it with lavender

Painted fern prefers moist shade, so plant it in a shady bed or under trees rather than in sunny lavender plantings.

Care

Grow in part to full shade in moist, humus-rich soil; a little morning sun deepens the color, but protect from hot afternoon sun. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Remove old fronds in early spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the center where new fronds (fiddleheads) form.

Spacing

18–24" apart; larger lady ferns and giant painted types up to 30".

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.0–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost or leaf mold and mulch with shredded leaves. Lady ferns (A. filix-femina) want more moisture than Japanese painted ferns (A. niponicum).

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; painted ferns like some morning sun).

Japanese painted ferns color best with gentle morning light. Most lady ferns need shade; afternoon sun causes scorch and wilting.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fronds unfurl in mid- to late spring, after many perennials; painted ferns can be especially late. Look for small fiddleheads at the crown before you worry.
