Pink Panther brings pink foliage into the shade garden. Semi-glossy leaves open a metallic pink in spring, then deepen to a dark berry pink with darker veins as the season goes on.
It grows into a compact, dense clump 10 to 12 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. In midsummer, dark stems rise to about 28 to 30 inches with light pink flowers in dark rose cups. Filtered light or shade protects the leaf color. It is a good accent in container combinations and shady beds, and the tall flower stems can be cut for small arrangements.
What it looks like
A compact, dense, low mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide of rounded, semi-glossy leaves. New leaves are metallic pink; mature leaves are dark berry pink with deeper burgundy veins. In midsummer, dark stems 28 to 30 inches tall carry narrow spikes of small light pink bells held in dark rose calyces. At peak the plant is a pink-and-berry mound topped with slender rose-pink wands.
Growing it with lavender
Pink Panther colors best in filtered shade, so give it a shady bed away from the lavender, where it can brighten ferns, hostas and green groundcovers.
Care
Grows in full sun to full shade, but filtered light or shade gives the best pink color. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Remove spent flower stems and old leaves in early spring.
