Prairie Wildfire is a classic fragrant red daylily with 5-inch velvety flowers, slightly recurved petals and a yellow throat. A high bud count ensures plenty of blooms in midsummer.
The flowers are presented just above handsome mounds of arching foliage, making it a tidy, colorful choice for sunny borders.
What it looks like
Flowers about 5 inches across with slightly recurved, velvety petals in rich true red and a yellow throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 23 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom velvety red flowers sit just above the arching mound of leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Its velvety red flowers add warmth in front of lavender in the same full sun and well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.
