Pride and Joy is a darker version of the popular Pure Joy stonecrop, with deeper green leaves and dark pink flowers. It forms the same neat, rounded, mushroom-cap dome and blooms in late summer to early fall.
It looks especially bold planted in groups along a border edge or in a rock garden. The succulent, toothed leaves look good all season, handle drought easily and are left alone by rabbits. Leave the seed heads up for winter interest and birds.
What it looks like
A dome of small star-shaped flowers in dark pink completely covers the plant, forming a rounded cap. Leaves are small, fleshy, oval and sharply toothed, about 1 inch long, in darker green with a bluish cast. The plant is a neat, dome-shaped mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. At peak bloom it looks like a round, dark pink mushroom cap sitting on a thin layer of green.
Growing it with lavender
This compact sedum thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, and its rounded succulent mounds make a neat, contrasting edge along the front of a lavender bed while blooming after the lavender is cut.
Care
Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant once established and rots in soggy ground. Hardy in zones 3-9; cut back the old stems in early spring before new growth starts.
