Pumpkin Spice has bronze red leaves that bring autumn tones to the spring and early summer garden. Each lobed leaf, about 4 inches across, carries deep mahogany centers that follow the veins outward.
It forms a very dense mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 22 inches wide. Dark red stems carry cream flowers in early summer. It is a villosa hybrid, which adds heat and humidity tolerance. Filtered sun or afternoon shade gives the best color.
What it looks like
A dense, low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 22 inches wide of lobed, bronze red leaves about 4 inches across with deep mahogany centers that spread along the veins. In early summer, dark red stems 16 to 20 inches tall carry slim spikes of tiny cream flowers. At peak the plant is a warm, rust-colored mound with a light cream haze above.
Growing it with lavender
This one prefers afternoon shade and even moisture, so plant it in a shadier bed away from the lavender, next to chartreuse or green foliage.
Care
Grows in full sun to full shade, but filtered sun or afternoon shade gives the best color. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Trim old leaves in early spring.
