Queen Nectarine is a big, full hummingbird mint with soft peach flowers set in mauve calyxes. Flowers cover the top two thirds of the plant from midsummer on, and the calyxes keep color going into fall. It has proven reliably winter hardy in West Michigan trials.
At 30 to 36 inches tall and about as wide, it has real presence in a border or pollinator garden. It is a Michigan State University top performer, a favorite of hummingbirds and bees, drought tolerant and usually left alone by deer.
What it looks like
Numerous upright spikes 4 to 6 inches long densely set with small tubular flowers in soft peach, each held in a mauve to dusky rose calyx, for a peach-and-mauve blend. Spikes cover the upper two thirds of the plant. Leaves are medium green, oval and toothed, aromatic. The plant is large, full and bushy, 30 to 36 inches tall and 32 to 36 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a broad mass of peach and mauve spikes.
Growing it with lavender
Queen Nectarine thrives in the same full sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its soft peach and mauve spikes make a tall, warm backdrop for lavender while blooming well past lavender's first flush.
Care
Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.
