Racing Stripes is a large, commanding mangave with a light green band running down the center of each dark green leaf. The stiff leaves arch slightly downward, giving the rosette a strong, upright presence.
It grows about 14 to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide, making it a bold focal point in containers or sunny beds. It is easy to grow, drought tolerant and ignored by deer and rabbits.
What it looks like
Stiff, lance-shaped leaves about 2 inches wide have a broad, lighter lime-green central stripe framed by dark green margins. The leaves rise upward and arch slightly downward at the tips, with small teeth along the edges and a sharp tip spine. They form a large, upright, open rosette 14 to 18 inches tall and 22 to 28 inches wide. The rosette looks like a bold, striped green star.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
