About the Product

Red Hot Returns has brilliant cherry red, ruffled blossoms with a bright yellow halo and an apple green throat. The flowers rest just above the dark green foliage like a bouquet.

It is a vigorous grower that sends up several scapes per fan, blooming from early July and repeating into fall. Each flower stays open 16 hours or more.

What it looks like

Flowers about 4 inches across with ruffled petals in brilliant cherry red, a bright yellow halo around the center and an apple green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 28 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped dark green leaves. The foliage clump is about 17 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom cherry red flowers sit just above the dark green foliage like a bouquet.

Growing it with lavender

Its cherry red flowers keep color going beside lavender from summer into fall in the same sunny, well-drained soil.

Care

Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Deadhead regularly and pull spent scapes to keep new buds coming, and divide crowded clumps every few years.

Spring or late summer to early fall, at least 4–6 weeks before frost.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

You'll get one or more 'fans' of trimmed leaves on a crown with thick, tuberous roots. Soak roots for a few hours, then spread them over a mound of soil in the hole and cover so the crown sits no more than 1 inch deep.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Green shoots break through in early to mid spring. Evergreen types may look mushy after winter but regrow. Bloom varies by variety, from early summer to late summer.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or late summer to early fall, at least 4–6 weeks before frost.

How deep

Set the crown, where the leaves meet the roots, no more than 1 inch below the soil surface. Planting deeper reduces bloom.

Spacing

18–24 inches.

Soil

Most soils, from sand to clay · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Work compost into heavy clay or very sandy soil before planting.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Shade cuts down flowers. Dark reds and purples can like light afternoon shade.
