About the Product

Red Rover has large, deeply lobed leaves cut into almost finger-like sections, giving it a very distinctive texture. Spring leaves are a bright coppery red with burgundy red centers, and they mellow toward olive green as the weather heats up.

The plant stays low, 6 to 8 inches tall, and spreads to about 20 inches. Burgundy rose stems hold creamy white flowers well above the foliage, reaching 28 to 34 inches. As a villosa hybrid, it handles hot, humid summers, and the foliage is evergreen in most climates.

What it looks like

A low, spreading plant 6 to 8 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide of large leaves about 5 inches across, deeply cut into narrow, finger-like lobes. Spring leaves are coppery red with burgundy red centers; in summer they shift to olive green. Tall burgundy rose stems 28 to 34 inches high carry slim spikes of tiny creamy white flowers. At peak the planting is a low, lacy copper-red mat with airy white spires standing well above.

Growing it with lavender

Red Rover prefers more moisture and shade than lavender, so plant it in a shadier bed nearby with green hostas or ferns.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade; afternoon shade helps in hot sites. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Trim old leaves and spent stems in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; never bury it.

Spacing

12–18" apart.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to clay or sand. Avoid low, wet spots; crowns rot from overwatering.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; more sun in cool, northern gardens).

Darker-leaved types handle more sun once established. Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Often semi-evergreen; old leaves may look ragged in spring. Fresh leaves appear from the crown in early to mid-spring.

Care details are written for the whole foamy bells group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
