Royal Raspberry is a large, full hummingbird mint with rosy purple flowers held in deep burgundy calyxes. Blooms cover the top two thirds of the plant from mid to late summer, and the calyxes hold their color well into fall.
New spring foliage emerges with a burgundy tint before turning green. At about 30 inches tall and wide, it makes a strong statement in a sunny border or pollinator garden and has overwintered reliably in West Michigan trials. Hummingbirds especially love it, and deer usually avoid it.
What it looks like
Many upright spikes 4 to 6 inches long densely packed with small tubular flowers in rosy purple, each held in a deep burgundy calyx, giving a rich raspberry-purple effect. Spikes cover the upper two thirds of the plant. Leaves are oval and toothed, emerging with a burgundy cast in spring and maturing to medium green. The plant is full and bushy, 28 to 32 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a dense mound of raspberry-purple spikes.
Growing it with lavender
Royal Raspberry loves the same full sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its raspberry-purple spikes deepen the color of a lavender planting and keep it blooming into late summer.
Care
Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.
