About the Product

Rozanne is famous for blooming longer than almost any other perennial, from late spring right up to mid fall. Its large violet-blue flowers have white eyes and fine reddish-purple veining, and because it sets no seed it keeps pouring its energy into new blooms.

One plant spreads wide in a single season, weaving through its neighbors and filling gaps. It has won many garden awards, and it looks especially good beside yellow or chartreuse flowers and foliage.

What it looks like

Large, flat, saucer-shaped flowers about 2 to 2½ inches across in glowing violet-blue with a clear white center and fine reddish-purple veins radiating from the middle. Flowers are borne continuously over the whole plant on trailing stems. Leaves are deeply lobed and palm-shaped, deep green with light chartreuse marbling. The plant is a wide, sprawling mound 18 to 20 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet across. At peak bloom it is a broad carpet studded with dozens of violet-blue flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Rozanne's violet-blue saucers weave nicely along the front of a lavender planting in the same sunny, well-drained spot and keep blue color going long after lavender finishes.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture. Hardy in zones 5 to 8. Give it room to spread, and cut it back by about half in midsummer if it gets leggy; it regrows and blooms again quickly.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots and grow on until rooted out, or plant straight into prepared soil in spring once frost danger passes. Keep moist for the first few weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, same depth as in the plug.

Spacing

18–24 inches apart; trailing hybrids can spread 2–3 feet.

Soil

Average, loamy soil · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy or heavy clay soil. Avoid soggy spots; crowns rot in wet winter soil.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

In hot regions give afternoon shade. Meadow cranesbill (G. pratense) types prefer full sun; some hybrids bloom all summer.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

New leaves emerge from the crown in mid-spring. Some long-blooming hybrids are late to start and may look like bare crowns until late April or May.
