About the Product

Silver Mound is a longtime favorite silver foliage plant, forming a compact, silky cushion of soft, feathery leaves. The fine texture and bright silver color make it stand out in edging, rock gardens and containers.

It stays under a foot tall and is ideal as a filler in hot, dry spots where other plants struggle. It holds an Award of Garden Merit and is avoided by deer and rabbits. Give it lean soil and plenty of sun for the tightest mound.

What it looks like

Very fine, thread-like, feathery leaves covered in silky hairs, giving a soft silver-green to silver-white color and a satiny sheen. The leaves form a dense, rounded, cushion-like dome. Small, insignificant flower stems may appear in summer. The plant is compact, 8 to 10 inches tall and 10 to 15 inches wide. At its best it is a perfectly rounded silver pillow.

Growing it with lavender

Silver Mound loves the same hot sun and lean, dry soil as lavender, and its soft silver cushions make a classic edging in front of a lavender row.

Care

Grow in full sun in lean, sharply drained soil; avoid rich or wet soil, which causes the center to open up. Hardy in USDA zones 3-7. Shear back by about half in early summer, before it flowers, to keep the mound tight.

How to grow Silver Mound

Artemisia · Artemisia schmidtiana

Silver mound artemisia needs full sun and lean, dry, fast-draining soil. Its biggest enemy is humidity and wet soil, which make the mound split open and rot in midsummer.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Arrives as a small crown with fibrous roots and perhaps a few gray, fuzzy stubs. Soak 20 minutes, plant crown at soil level in lean soil, water once and then let it dry slightly between waterings.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. New silver-green shoots push from the base in early to mid spring. Old woody stems from last year can look dead; growth comes from the crown.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost, or late summer to early fall.

How deep

Plant with the crown exactly at soil level. Burying the crown or piling mulch on it invites rot.

Spacing

About 12–18 in apart so air moves between mounds.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or average, low in organic matter · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Avoid compost-rich beds. In clay, add grit and plant on a mound or raised edge; good airflow and dry soil keep it tight and silver.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very light afternoon shade).

Shade and rich soil both make the mound loose and floppy.
