When it arrives
Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.
Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).
Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.
12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.
Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5
Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.
Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).
Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.
Don’t give up on it
Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
Press down heaved crowns; trim old leaves.
Water in dry spells; remove flower stalks if desired.
Plant or divide early; mulch after freeze.
Leave foliage on to protect the crown.
First season: Keep evenly moist the first season; water when the top inch dries.
After that: Moderate. Water in dry spells; pots and sunny sites need more.
Light. A spring compost top-dressing or light slow-release feed is enough.
Snip flower stalks after bloom if grown for foliage. In spring, cut away winter-damaged leaves once new growth starts.
Every 3-4 years when crowns get woody and lift. Divide in spring and replant pieces with roots, crown at soil level.
Hardy, but freeze-thaw cycles push shallow crowns up. Mulch after the ground freezes and press heaved plants back in spring.
Leaves can scorch in sun and heat. Villosa-based types handle Southern humidity best.

Crispy, bleached leaf edges mean too much sun or dry soil. Soft, mushy crowns or sudden wilting in wet soil mean rot.

Give it its own spot
Better in a part-shade bed with richer, moister soil. In lavender's full-sun, dry bed most coral bells scorch; pair them with hostas, ferns, and astilbe instead.
