Smoking Gun is a compact, upright switch grass with medium green leaves topped by big, airy tan flower clouds that make up more than a third of the plant's height. The effect is soft and smoky above a tidy base.
At about 3½ feet tall and 2 feet wide, it fits the middle of the border, and its sturdy stems stay standing through winter unless snows are heavy. It is low maintenance, deer resistant and tolerant of drought and salt.
What it looks like
Narrow, medium green leaves about ½ inch wide form a compact, upright clump. In late summer, large, open, airy panicles of tiny tan flowers rise above the foliage, making up more than a third of the total height and creating a soft, smoky haze. The plant is 38 to 42 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. In fall the leaves turn yellow to tan, and the seed heads persist into winter.
Growing it with lavender
Smoking Gun likes full sun like lavender, and its soft tan haze behind a lavender planting adds late-season movement after the lavender blooms.
Care
Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.
