About the Product

Snow Leopard is a variegated mangave with long, lance-shaped leaves edged in creamy white. Dark spots dot the green centers and turn pink where they fall on the pale margins, like a big cat's coat.

The bright variegation reads clearly from a distance, and the spotting deepens in full sun. It grows about 16 to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide, a striking specimen for containers.

What it looks like

Long, lance-shaped leaves about 1½ inches wide have green centers dotted with dark spots and wide creamy white margins where the spots appear cherry red to pink. The leaves arch outward from the center with small teeth along the edges and a tip spine. They form an open, spreading rosette 16 to 18 inches tall and 22 to 24 inches wide. From a distance the rosette looks like a bright green-and-white star; up close the spotting gives a leopard-like pattern.

Growing it with lavender

Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.

Care

Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.

Hardy in zones 9a–11b

Plant outside after all danger of frost, when nights stay above 50°F.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil. Pot into gritty succulent mix and let it dry slightly between waterings.

When to plant

Plant outside after all danger of frost, when nights stay above 50°F.

How deep

Set the base of the rosette level with the soil surface; never bury the leaves.

Spacing

Size varies a lot: 12–36 inches depending on variety.

Soil

Gritty cactus or succulent mix · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Use succulent mix with extra pumice or perlite. In the ground, plant in a raised gravelly spot; wet soil causes rot.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

More sun brings out the red and purple spots and keeps rosettes tight.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen and doesn't go dormant. Growth slows in winter indoors and speeds up in summer heat.
