About the Product

Spearmint pairs silvery green leaves with dark green veins and a long season of flowers. The foliage is a rich, deep green rather than yellow-green, which makes the pink blooms stand out all the more.

The flowers are two-toned, with dark pink tips and lighter pink bases, and they bloom over a long stretch from midsummer into late summer. The plant forms a low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and up to 30 inches wide, and the flower stems are nice for cutting.

What it looks like

A low, wide mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 26 to 30 inches wide of rounded leaves in silvery green with contrasting dark green veins. Stems 18 to 22 inches tall carry many narrow spikes of small bicolor bells, dark pink at the tips and pale pink at the base. At peak bloom the plant is a silver-green mound under a thick crown of two-tone pink flower wands.

Growing it with lavender

The silvery green foliage and pink flowers make a soft edging in front of lavender where there is some afternoon shade and a bit more moisture.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade, with afternoon shade best in hot sites. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly; hardy in zones 4-9. Deadhead spent flower stems to keep the bloom going and tidy leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
