Sterling Silver is a Brunnera with extra-large, heart-shaped leaves that shine silver from spring through fall. Individual leaves can reach 7 to 8 inches wide, giving the plant real presence in a shade garden, and it holds up better in summer heat than older silver-leaf types.
In spring, clouds of tiny blue flowers hover over the foliage. The plant stays a manageable 10 to 14 inches tall and about 2 feet wide, so it works well as an edging, a groundcover in groups or a bright accent in a shaded pot.
What it looks like
A low, rounded clump of very large heart-shaped leaves, 7 to 8 inches wide, almost completely silver with a faint green tint along the veins and edges. The leaves have a smooth, slightly frosted matte surface and are held on short stems in overlapping layers, forming a mound 10 to 14 inches tall and about 20 to 24 inches wide. In mid spring, thin branched stems lift loose sprays of tiny sky-blue flowers, each about a quarter inch across with a pale center, several inches above the leaves. At peak bloom the plant looks like a silver cushion dusted with a blue haze.
Growing it with lavender
Sterling Silver needs shade and consistent moisture, so give it a spot away from your lavender, such as a woodland bed or the shady side of the house.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in average to fertile soil that is kept evenly moist, especially in summer. Hardy in zones 3-8. Remove spent flower stems after bloom and water during dry spells to keep the leaves looking their best.
