About the Product

Tall Tails is a large catmint that brings height and structure to a sunny planting, reaching 28 to 32 inches tall and about 3 feet wide. Its upright framework is noticeably stiffer than older tall catmints, so it holds its shape better.

Soft lilac-blue flowers open early in the season and continue for a long stretch, giving pollinators an early source of nectar. It is drought tolerant, easy to grow and deer and rabbit resistant, and it works well filling the middle of a border or anchoring a mass planting.

What it looks like

Long, upright spikes of small, tubular, two-lipped flowers in soft lilac-blue rise from sturdy, branching stems, held in dusky purple calyxes. The leaves are small, oval to heart-shaped, gray-green and scalloped. The plant forms a large, upright-rounded clump about 28 to 32 inches tall and 36 to 40 inches wide with stems that stay fairly rigid. At peak bloom the tall spikes create a broad, soft blue-violet cloud.

Growing it with lavender

Catmint is one of lavender's best partners: it wants the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil, and its soft blue-violet haze blooms alongside lavender and keeps going after the lavender harvest.

Care

Plant in full sun in lean to average, well-drained soil; once established it handles dry spells with little extra water. Hardy in zones 3-8. Shear the plant back by about a third after the first big flush of bloom to tidy it and push a fresh round of flowers.

How to grow Tall Tails

Catmint · Nepeta × faassenii

Catmint is a tough, long-blooming perennial for full sun and well-drained soil. It shrugs off drought, heat and poor soil, and a midsummer shearing brings a second wave of blue flowers.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly after hardening off, or pot into 4-inch pots to grow on. They root quickly; pinch tips once to make bushier plants.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, same depth as the plug or as the bare-root crown grew.

Spacing

18–36 inches depending on variety; large types spread 3 feet wide.

Soil

Average to lean, sandy or loamy · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Skip rich compost; lean soil keeps it compact. Loosen clay or plant on a slight rise so it doesn't sit wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In shade it gets floppy and blooms less.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Small, gray-green leaves sprout from the crown in early to mid-spring. Old stems stay brown; look for new growth at the base.
