About the Product

Treasure Trove covers itself in large golden yellow, star-shaped flowers on well-branched stems, so new buds keep opening from midsummer into early fall. It is a vigorous plant with plenty of big leaves as well as flowers.

The foliage is highly resistant to Septoria leaf spot, a common problem on black-eyed Susans, so the clump stays clean and green. Use it in borders, prairie plantings and rain gardens; deer and rabbits usually avoid it, and birds visit the seed heads in fall.

What it looks like

Large single flowers about 3 inches across with pointed golden yellow petals arranged in a star shape around a dark brown to black central cone. Flowers sit on many branched stems and cover the top and sides of the plant. Leaves are large, broad, lance-shaped to oval and medium green, forming a dense, robust clump. The plant grows 32 to 36 inches tall and 36 to 42 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a big, rounded mass of gold stars with dark eyes.

Growing it with lavender

Treasure Trove shares lavender's love of sun and well-drained soil, and its large gold stars make a bold backdrop for lavender, flowering after the main lavender bloom.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil; it handles some drought once established. Hardy in zones 4-9; leave seed heads for winter interest and birds, then cut stems back in early spring.
