About the Product

Very Van Gogh produces a mass of rosy purple, paintbrush-like spikes on heavily branched stems from midsummer into late summer. Each main spike is ringed by as many as a dozen smaller side spikes, which keeps the show going for weeks.

Honeybees, butterflies and hummingbirds all visit. The bright green, upright foliage may pick up red tones in fall, adding a little late-season color.

What it looks like

Paintbrush-like main flower spikes 4 to 6 inches long of tiny rosy purple florets, each surrounded by up to a dozen shorter side spikes on heavily branched stems, creating a bushy crown of flowers. Leaves are lance-shaped, finely toothed and bright green, 2 to 3 inches long, sometimes turning reddish in fall. The plant is an upright clump 18 to 20 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. At peak it looks like a green clump topped with a dense candelabra of purple brushes.

Growing it with lavender

Speedwell likes full sun like lavender but appreciates a little more moisture, so set it at the edge of a lavender bed where it gets occasional water; its slender spikes echo lavender's form and extend the season of spiky color.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil that does not stay dry for long. Hardy in zones 4-8; cut spent spikes back to the next set of side buds to keep new flowers coming, and divide crowded clumps every few years in spring.

Spike Speedwell · Veronica

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil that stays evenly moist in summer. Cut spent spikes back to the leafy base for repeat bloom; soggy winter soil causes rot.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level; keep mulch off the crown.

Spacing

12–18" apart, by variety size.

Soil

Loam with organic matter · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost to sandy soil; loosen clay or raise the bed so winter water drains away from the crown.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with floppier spikes).

6+ hours of sun keeps spikes upright and blooming.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Low green leafy rosettes appear in early spring; flower spikes follow in late spring to early summer.
