About the Product

Vulcan is a vigorous, white-centered hosta with broad, heart-shaped leaves. Dark green margins and streaks of lighter yellow jet in toward the bright white center, and the center holds up well rather than browning out in summer.

It forms a mound about 22 inches tall and 3 feet wide and grows at a good clip. In mid to late summer, white scapes carry light lavender flowers just above the leaves. Use it as a specimen, massed, or in a container.

What it looks like

Broad, heart-shaped leaves with a bright white center, dark green margins, and lighter yellow-green streaks jetting inward between them. Leaves are smooth with visible veins and a slight wave. The plant forms a rounded mound about 22 inches tall and 36 inches wide. In mid to late summer, white scapes about 24 inches tall carry light lavender trumpet flowers just above the foliage. At peak the white centers glow within the dark green edges.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

How to grow Vulcan

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Arrives as a dormant crown with pointed buds (eyes) and a mass of fleshy roots. Soak roots 1–2 hours, then plant with roots spread out over a mound and the crown even with the soil. Water well; leaves follow in a few weeks.

Expect new growth in 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.
