About the Product

Wild Rose has large, bright rosy purple leaves with deep charcoal gray veins that make the color stand out, especially in shade. It is an easy one to spot in a planting and pairs well with dark-leaved coral bells such as Black Pearl.

The plant forms a dense, low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide. In midsummer, upright dark burgundy rose stems carry dark buds that open to rosy pink flowers on stems 18 to 22 inches tall.

What it looks like

A dense, low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide of large, rounded leaves in bright rosy purple with deep charcoal gray veining radiating from the center. Upright dark burgundy rose stems 18 to 22 inches tall carry dark buds opening to small rosy pink bells in midsummer. At peak the plant is a vivid rose-purple mound with matching pink wands above.

Growing it with lavender

The rosy purple foliage suits the shadier end of a lavender bed where it gets afternoon shade and more water than the lavender.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly; hardy in zones 4-9. Trim spent flower stems and remove winter-worn leaves in early spring.

How to grow Wild Rose

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
