72-Cell Star Deep Plug Tray: The Workhorse for Lavender Cuttings

On this page
The 72 Cell Star Deep Plug Tray hits the middle ground between tiny seed cells and big finishing cells. Its 72 star-shaped cells are 3 inches deep, which is the sweet spot for rooting lavender cuttings and growing herb starts into firm plugs.
Quick answer: A 6 x 12 tray of 72 star-shaped cells, 1.56 inches across and 3 inches deep. The star shape and vertical ribs steer roots downward, so plugs come out cleanly and are less likely to be root-bound.

Why the star shape matters
In a smooth round cell, roots that hit the wall tend to circle. The points of a star cell and the ribs along its sides interrupt that path and push roots down toward the drain hole instead. The result is a plug with roots spread through the whole cell, which slides out in one piece and settles into the ground quickly. Deeper cells also hold a little more moisture, so the plugs are more forgiving between waterings.
Rooting lavender cuttings
Most named lavender cultivars are propagated from cuttings so each plant matches its parent. A typical approach is to take short, non-flowering stem tips, strip the lower leaves and stick them into a lean, well-draining mix in each cell. Keep humidity up and the mix barely moist, never soggy. Once roots fill the cell, the plugs are ready to plant out or pot up. The same tray works well for herbs like rosemary, thyme and sage.
Handling and support
Set the tray in a sturdy carrier flat, such as our heavy-duty web trays, for moving full trays around the greenhouse. Fill cells evenly so they dry at the same rate, and label rows by cultivar before you forget which is which. You will forget.
Pack sizes
It is offered in packs from a single tray up to 100. A full case holds 50 trays. See the product page for current pack sizes and availability, or visit the Wholesale Hub for grower orders.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same layout as your lavender plug trays?
Many of our lavender cultivars are offered as 72-cell plug trays, so this is a familiar format for growers who buy plugs from us and want to propagate their own.
Can I reuse it?
Yes. Rinse and clean the tray between crops and let it dry before refilling.
