Anouk Deluxe 201909 Lavender: A Spanish Lavender Winter Plan Save

Anouk Deluxe 201909 lavender is a compact, mounded Spanish lavender that grows to about 18 inches tall and 14 inches wide. Its purple flowers wear soft, light purple bracts, and the green foliage gives the plant a fresh look. Fragrance is moderate, and flowering begins in early May with a peak in early June.

It is Lavandula stoechas 'Anouk Deluxe 201909'. Like every Spanish lavender, its biggest question in a cold-winter garden is what to do with it in November, so this note spends some time there.

Planting and summer care

Give it full sun and soil that drains quickly. In the ground, plant in sandy, gravelly or raised beds about 14 to 18 inches apart. In pots, use a gritty mix in a container 10 to 14 inches across with a drainage hole. Water deeply when the top inch or two is dry, snip faded heads at the base of the stem to keep high rebloom going, and trim lightly after a heavy flush.

If you plan to winter it indoors, grow it in a pot from the start. Digging up an established Spanish lavender in fall is possible, but it sets the plant back.

A winter plan, step by step

  1. Watch the forecast. Bring the pot in before the first hard frost. A light frost will not hurt it; a hard freeze can.
  2. Trim lightly. Remove spent flowers and tidy the shape. Save any hard pruning for spring.
  3. Check for hitchhikers. Look under leaves and at the soil surface before it comes inside.
  4. Pick the right room. Cool and bright is the goal: an unheated sunroom, a bright garage window or a cool bedroom with a south window. A warm, dim living room is the hardest place for it.
  5. Water sparingly. Water only when the mix is dry an inch or two down. Winter rot kills more potted lavender than cold.
  6. Skip fertilizer until spring growth starts.
  7. Move it back out gradually. After your last frost, set it outside in partial shade for a few days, then full sun.

The Frost Date Estimator gives you both the fall and spring dates to plan around.

If you would rather plant it out

At the warm end of its 6a to 9b range, plant it in the ground in a sunny, sheltered spot with sharp drainage. Spanish lavender is generally less cold-hardy than English lavender, so in borderline areas the warmest corner of the yard, near a south-facing wall, gives it the best odds.

Using the flowers

It is rated good for fresh bouquets and dried flowers. Dry heads on a screen out of direct sun for sachets and potpourri. Culinary use is not recommended.

Choosing a plant format

It is offered as a 3-inch plug, a 4-inch pot or a 1-gallon pot. A gallon plant in its own pot is the easiest to carry in and out. See the product page for current sizes and availability, and use Notify Me there if it is not available right now.

Frequently asked questions

Will it keep blooming indoors?

Usually not much. Think of winter as a rest; it will flower again once it is back in full sun.

Why is my wintering lavender dropping leaves?

Low light and overwatering are the usual causes. Move it to a brighter spot and let the mix dry more between waterings.

How does it differ from 201908?

201909 is larger, about 18 inches tall, with purple flowers and light purple bracts; 201908 is about 7.5 inches with dark purple flowers.
