About Bluff View Art District
Bluff View Art District covers about a block and a half of restored buildings on the bluffs above the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga, looking out over downtown and the Walnut Street Bridge. Dr. Charles and Mary Portera started it in 1991, when they bought the building that now holds River Gallery and Rembrandt's Coffee House, and the district is still family-owned. It calls itself Chattanooga's first art district.
Many visits start at Rembrandt's Coffee House, open daily 8 AM to 9 PM and serving coffee roasted in the district, hand-made pastries and cakes, soups and sandwiches, with a patio outside. Tony's Pasta Shop & Trattoria serves hand-cut pasta with sauces made from herbs and tomatoes grown in the district's own gardens, Sicilian-recipe meatballs and gluten-safe dishes; it opens at 11 AM daily, closes at 9 PM (10 PM Friday and Saturday) and does not take reservations. Bluff View Bakery bakes the rustic breads served across the district.
River Gallery shows work by local, regional and national artists, Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 1 to 5 PM, and its sculpture garden sits out on the bluff. The Bluff View Inn rents rooms in three restored houses: the Maclellan House (about 1889), the T.C. Thompson House (about 1908) and the Martin House (about 1927), within walking distance of the Hunter Museum of American Art and the RiverWalk. Customer parking is free, and leashed pets are welcome on patios and outdoor areas.
Flat Top Mountain Farms in Soddy-Daisy, a sibling-run lavender farm that opens in June for pick-your-own lavender, is about 15 miles to the north. A morning in the lavender field and a late lunch on Tony's patio make a good early-summer day.
