About High Country Salmon
High Country Salmon is a family-owned farm that raises chinook salmon in the glacier-fed hydro canals about 3 km south of Twizel on State Highway 8. It grows, processes and sells its fish on site and has hosted locals, travelers, schools and tour groups for more than 25 years, with free fish feeding and farm talks on aquaculture, chinook salmon and how to fillet a fish.
The big draw is catching your own. A guide sets you up on a purpose-built platform with rod and bait, no licence needed, and most fish weigh 3 to 5 kg; if you land one over 6 kg you can swap it for a smaller one. There is no catch-and-release, so you buy what you land: in October 2026 the website listed a guide fee from NZ$55 per salmon, including filleting, plus NZ$38 per kg. The team cleans and vacuum-packs the fish and packs it on ice for the road. Online booking secures a spot; walk-ins are welcome when there is room, and children 12 and under need an adult with them.
Logans, which the farm calls New Zealand's only floating café, serves sashimi, sushi, salmon planks, coffee and cabinet food daily from 9am to 8pm. The Fish Shop & Deli sells fresh fillets plus smoked and cured salmon in many flavors (NZ$9.90 per 100 g as listed), with deli extras and travel packs. Visitor activities run 9am to 5pm daily, and everything closes on Christmas Day. Groups of 8 to 25 should book ahead.
New Zealand Alpine Lavender at 657 Mt Cook Road, Ben Ohau, is north of Twizel on the road to Aoraki/Mount Cook, about 20 minutes away. Visit the lavender on your way up to the mountains and stop for salmon on the way back.
