Martin Wine Cellar is a family-owned wine, spirits and beer shop, not a vineyard. The business opened on May 24, 1946, when David Young Martin Jr. started selling from half of a shotgun double at General Taylor and Baronne streets in New Orleans. His son Cedric Martin joined full time in 1974, and the family still runs the company. The Metairie store opened in 1989 and grew in 2000 into a 12,000-square-foot shop with a tasting room and a 110-seat deli and bistro.
The Metairie store has a long history of its own. After Hurricane Katrina flooded the Baronne Street shop in 2005, the Metairie location reopened on September 26 of that year. Today the store sits just off Veterans Highway and is open all year. Shelves cover wine, spirits, imported beer and specialty foods, and the company says it helped popularize gift baskets in the early 1960s.
Tasting has been part of the business for decades: the company's history dates its Thursday Tasting Series to 1975 and its spirits classes to 2007. The Metairie store hosts regular wine tastings, educational events, beer tastings and meet-the-brewer nights, with tickets sold through their website. The deli and bistro serves lunch for dine-in or online ordering, and the company also offers catering, custom-label wine, event space and local delivery. It makes a practical stop for picking up a bottle or a deli lunch while in the New Orleans area.
