About Pannonhalma Archabbey Herb Garden (Levendulanapok)
Pannonhalma Archabbey, the Benedictine monastery on the hill above the village of Pannonhalma, has kept an herb garden since the Middle Ages. Today about 30 kinds of medicinal herbs grow on roughly 7 hectares, and lavender is the best known of them. In 2011 the monks added a 16-bed demonstration garden laid out after the 9th-century St. Gallen monastery plan. Lavender from here has traveled: the Levendárium farm at Dörgicse says its first plants came from the abbey.
The lavender is opened to the public once a year for Levendulanapok (Lavender Days), a weekend in mid-June. In 2026 it ran June 13–14 in the herb garden and on the village's main square. Visitors could cut their own lavender, take guided herb-garden walks and a silent walk in the forest, make lavender wreaths, watch a bird-ringing demonstration and join guided tours of the abbey library and baroque rooms.
Food and drink are a big part of the weekend: wine tastings, lavender pastries, ice cream and syrups, cooking demonstrations by guest chefs, bread making and an art picnic on the square, plus activities for children.
Parking right beside the herb garden is free, while the abbey's other lots charge 300 Ft per hour in season. The historic complex is only partly wheelchair accessible, so plan on gravel and hill paths around the garden. Győr is the nearest city, about 20 km to the north.
