About Southern Hotel Bed & Breakfast

The Southern Hotel stands on South Third Street in Ste. Genevieve, one of Missouri's oldest towns, in a Federal-style building dating to around 1790. It has lodged travelers since 1805, and the town's tourism office calls it the longest-operating lodging west of the Mississippi. Innkeepers Mike and Cathy bought what they describe as a wreck of a building in December 1985 and restored it, work that earned a 2010 preservation award from the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Genevieve.

There are nine themed guest rooms, five on the second floor and four on the third, each furnished with period antiques and given its own bath and climate control. Breakfast is served hot at 8 or 9 a.m., whichever you choose, and has featured French toast, quiche, zucchini bread and flavored coffee. Mike hosts a complimentary wine, cheese and history hour from 6 to 7 p.m., a good way to learn the story of the town before you explore it.

Between meals there is a front porch lined with rocking chairs, a private garden lit in the evening, a billiard room and a former saloon room stocked with books on local history. The inn is meant for adults: it is listed as adults-only because of its fragile antiques, pets are not allowed and the building is not wheelchair accessible. Reservations are required, and parking is on the street.

Crystal Hill Farm near Bloomsdale is the nearest lavender farm on our list, about 20 minutes north. Check its website for open days, then come back to Ste. Genevieve in time for the evening history hour.
