About Uprise Bakery
Uprise Bakery opened on East Broadway in downtown Columbia in February 2001 and moved a few blocks in 2008 to 10 Hitt Street, where it shares the Hittsville building with Ragtag Cinema and Hitt Records. The focus is full-flavored artisan and whole-grain bread, with a counter, a kitchen and a bar all under one roof.
The bread schedule is worth planning around. Baguette, ciabatta and a natural bâtard come out every day and Columbia Sourdough most days, while other loaves rotate: Broadway Rye on Tuesdays and Fridays, Nine Grain on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, cranberry pecan on Wednesdays, olive on Fridays and rosemary olive oil on Mondays. Rolls follow the same daily lineup. On Saturdays the bakery also sets up at the Columbia Farmers Market.
Mornings bring biscuits and gravy, sausage biscuits, ham-and-cheese or egg croissants and house granola. At midday there are three vegetarian soups each day, salads such as a Thai Caesar, and sandwiches ranging from Cuban pulled pork and banh mi to roasted vegetable and hummus, with soup, salad and sandwich combos. The pastry case holds croissants, cinnamon rolls, scones and a long run of brownies and cookies, from a cappuccino brownie to spiced oatmeal cookies.
