Overview
The crown is the woody base where stems meet the roots. The Lavender Field's at-a-glance strip shows your average crown health, and the Season plan's Perennial crop section shows crown health and woodiness for the whole field.
How it's worked out each week
Crown health = plant health − 0.2 × woodiness − 0.25 × winter injury + an age bonus of 2 per year since planting (up to +8), kept between 0 and 100%.
Winter injury
In each Winter week, a plant whose health is under 55% gains winter injury: 0.08 points for every point of health below 55. Winter injury stays with the plant and keeps pulling crown health down.
Woodiness
- Woodiness is how much old, hard wood a plant has. Too much means fewer new flowering stems.
- It lowers harvest handling capacity: each point of woodiness takes 1% off, down to a floor of 35%.
- Missing spring pruning (none by early June) adds 10 woodiness (up to 70).
- Pruning removes it: 16 points in the spring window, 8 at other allowed times.
Tips
- If crown health averages under 60%, Farm Director suggests scouting crowns before treating symptoms.
- Keep the crown dry and never bury it; use gravel, not wood chips, as mulch.
