About the Product

Age of Gold is a large golden hosta with smooth, broad leaves in bright golden yellow. Its upright, spreading form gives it a strong presence as a specimen in the shade garden.

The clump grows about 25 inches tall and nearly 5 feet wide. In midsummer, near-white tubular flowers with a faint pale lavender blush inside rise on tall stems up to 4 feet. Morning sun or filtered shade gives the brightest gold.

What it looks like

An upright, spreading clump about 25 inches tall and 58 inches across of large, smooth, broad leaves in bright golden yellow. In midsummer, tall stems 42 to 48 inches high carry tubular near-white flowers with a faint pale lavender center. At peak the plant is a bold golden mound with slender white flower spikes towering above.

Growing it with lavender

Keep it out of the lavender field and plant it in a moist, shaded bed where it can pair with coral bells, ferns and bleeding hearts.

Care

Best in part to full shade; morning sun or filtered light brings out the gold. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.

How to grow Age of Gold

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
