Allstar is a vigorous, easy-to-grow June-bearing strawberry that ripens a bit later in the season. It gives heavy yields of large, firm, attractive berries with good flavor and color, great for fresh eating and desserts.
It resists leaf scorch, powdery mildew and several races of red stele root rot, which makes it a dependable choice for home gardens. Plants spread by runners into a productive matted row.
What it looks like
White, five-petaled flowers about ¾ inch across with golden yellow centers appear in late spring among the leaves. Leaves are medium green, divided into three rounded, toothed leaflets on upright stems. Large, firm, glossy red, broadly conical berries with small yellow seeds ripen in June. The plants form low clumps about 6 to 8 inches tall that spread by runners to about 3 feet. At harvest, the rows are full of big, bright berries resting on straw mulch.
Growing it with lavender
Strawberries enjoy full sun like lavender but want richer, more evenly moist soil, so grow them in a nearby raised bed or kitchen garden rather than among the lavender.
Care
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil with the crown level with the soil surface, and water regularly, especially while fruit is forming. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Mulch with straw to keep berries clean, and renew beds every few years with young runner plants.
