Apache Rose is a solid, upright switch grass that stands firm through wind and rain. Its gray-green leaves form a dense column, and in fall the leaf tips blush rosy red.
What sets it apart is its flowers: while most green switch grasses bloom cream or tan, Apache Rose carries rose-colored flower clouds in late summer. It stays standing through winter, giving shelter to birds, and works as a specimen, screen or container plant.
What it looks like
Narrow gray-green leaves about ½ inch wide form a dense, upright, columnar clump about 4 feet tall and 2½ feet wide. In late summer, airy, open panicles of tiny rose-pink to rosy red flowers rise just above the foliage, forming a soft pink haze. In fall the leaf tips flush rosy red and the plant later fades to tan. At peak bloom the clump is a firm gray-green column wrapped in a rosy cloud.
Growing it with lavender
Apache Rose shares lavender's love of full sun, and its gray-green column and rosy late-summer haze harmonize with lavender's gray foliage and purple tones.
Care
Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.
