About the Product

Apple Twist is a coral bells grown for foliage that changes through the season. New leaves come up chartreuse yellow with red veins, and as they mature the veining fades and the leaves shift to a fresh apple green.

The wavy, rippled leaves form a dense, full mound about a foot tall and up to two feet wide. It is a natural for edging shady paths and filling containers, and the evergreen foliage adds color well into the cold months.

What it looks like

Rounded, lobed leaves 3 to 4 inches across with wavy, rippled edges; new leaves are bright chartreuse yellow with red veins, and older leaves mature to apple green with the veining fading. The leaves overlap densely on short stems to form a low, full mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. In midsummer thin, wiry flower stems rise to about 18 to 20 inches with sprays of tiny bell-shaped flowers. At its best in late spring the mound shows a mix of glowing chartreuse leaves with red veining and softer apple green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Coral bells prefer shade and richer, evenly moist soil, so place this one in a shady bed or container away from the lavender, where its chartreuse leaves can light up a dim corner.

Care

Grow in part to full shade in humus-rich, well-drained soil kept evenly moist; soggy winter soil causes crown rot. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Trim off tattered leaves in early spring, and replant or mulch any crowns that heave out of the ground over winter.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
