About the Product

Arizona Red Shades produces masses of big crimson blanket flowers from early summer right into early fall, even through hot, dry weather. Because it is grown from seed, some blooms show a thin yellow edge, which adds a little variety.

The plant is short and tidy at 10 to 12 inches, blooms its first year, and asks for very little care. It is ideal for sunny borders, containers and dry, poor soils, and butterflies love it.

What it looks like

Daisy-like flowers about 3 inches across with broad, fringe-tipped petals in deep crimson red, some with a narrow yellow edge at the tips, around a domed maroon-brown center. Flowers are held singly on short, well-branched stems just above the leaves. Foliage is green, lance-shaped and slightly hairy. The plant is a compact, uniform mound 10 to 12 inches tall and about 12 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a low cushion of crimson flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Its crimson flowers bring warm contrast to lavender, and it thrives in the same sunny, lean, well-drained soil at the front of the bed.

Care

Grow in full sun in lean to average soil with sharp drainage; it actually prefers poorer soil. Hardy in zones 3 to 10 and very heat and drought tolerant. Deadhead regularly to extend bloom, and avoid heavy, wet soil in winter.

Hardy in zones 3a–10b

Spring after frost, early enough to root in before winter.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant plugs in full sun after frost or pot into 4 in pots. Water lightly; let soil dry slightly between waterings. Plugs often bloom the first summer.

When to plant

Spring after frost, early enough to root in before winter.

How deep

Crown level with the soil surface; never buried.

Spacing

About 12–18 in apart.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or average loam; lean · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Don't add rich compost or fertilizer. In clay, loosen soil, mix in grit and plant on a slight mound; wet clay is the main cause of winter death.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very light shade).

Needs full sun to bloom heavily and stay compact.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fuzzy gray-green basal leaves appear in early to mid spring. If nothing shows by late May, the plant likely died over winter, which happens with this short-lived perennial.

Care details are written for the whole blanket flower group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
