Aztec King is one of the largest mangaves, forming a big, upright rosette about 2 feet tall and more than 3 feet wide. Give it plenty of room to reach its full size.
In full sun, its wide, silvery green leaves are covered in burgundy flecks. The leaves arch gracefully and have softly scalloped edges, making a bold focal point in a large container or sunny bed.
What it looks like
Wide, broad, fleshy leaves up to about 3 inches across are silvery green, heavily flecked with small burgundy dots in full sun. The leaves arch outward and upward with gently scalloped, wavy margins and soft tip spines. They form a large, upright, open rosette 20 to 24 inches tall and 38 to 42 inches wide. The overall look is a big, sculptural silver-green star dusted with burgundy.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
