Ball Gown is a coral bells with large, heavily ruffled chartreuse leaves that bring bright color to shady spots. It is the light-leaved companion to darker ruffled varieties and pairs beautifully with them.
The low mound spreads to over two feet wide, and in midsummer it sends up tall stems of creamy white flowers. It performs well in garden beds and in mixed or single-variety containers, provided the drainage is good.
What it looks like
Large, rounded leaves 5 to 6 inches across, heavily ruffled with scalloped, slightly serrated edges, in bright chartreuse to yellow-green. The leaves overlap into a low, broad mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 24 to 28 inches wide. In midsummer slender stems rise 26 to 30 inches tall carrying airy sprays of tiny creamy white bell-shaped flowers. At its best the plant is a glowing chartreuse cushion of ruffled leaves with wands of cream flowers above.
Growing it with lavender
Ball Gown wants shade and steady moisture, so give it a shady bed or container apart from the lavender, where its chartreuse ruffles can brighten the spot.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in rich, well-drained soil with regular moisture; good drainage is key to avoiding crown rot. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Remove worn leaves in early spring and cut spent flower stems to keep the mound tidy.
