About the Product

Bedazzled Lavender is a hybrid spring phlox with star-shaped, notched flowers in soft lilac-purple, each with a paler halo and a dark purple star at the eye. Blooms cover a rounded, spreading plant a few days to a week ahead of standard creeping phlox.

It grows moderately in its first year, then fills in to make a groundcover about 6 to 8 inches tall and nearly 3 feet wide. Use it to edge paths, drape over walls or fill a sunny rock garden. Butterflies and bees visit in early spring.

What it looks like

Star-shaped flowers about 3/4 to 1 inch across have five notched petals in soft lilac-purple, a paler ring around the center and a deep purple starburst at the eye. The flowers cover the plant so thickly that little foliage shows. Leaves are small, narrow and green on trailing stems. The plant forms a rounded, spreading mat about 6 to 8 inches tall and 32 to 38 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a broad cushion of lilac flowers with dark starry centers.

Growing it with lavender

Creeping phlox likes the same sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its lilac carpet makes a neat spring edging along lavender beds, blooming weeks before the lavender does.

Care

Grow in full sun in lean to average, well-drained soil; once established it handles dry spells well. Hardy in zones 4-8. Expect modest growth the first year before it knits into a groundcover, and trim lightly after bloom to keep the mat dense.

How to grow Bedazzled Lavender

Phlox · Phlox

Two very different plants: garden phlox (P. paniculata) is a tall summer bloomer that wants sun, rich moist soil and good air flow; creeping phlox (P. subulata) is a spring groundcover for sun and lean, well-drained soil.

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots or plant out after hardening off. Creeping phlox plugs can go straight into the ground 12 inches apart to knit into a mat. Keep moist until rooted.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug or with the bare-root crown just at soil level.

Spacing

Garden phlox 18–24 inches for air flow; creeping phlox 12–18 inches for a mat.

Soil

Garden phlox: rich, moist loam. Creeping phlox: sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil. · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost for garden phlox. For creeping phlox, add grit to heavy clay or plant on slopes and walls so it never stays wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Garden phlox in shade gets more mildew and fewer flowers; creeping phlox blooms best in full sun.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Creeping phlox stays evergreen and flowers in early to mid-spring. Garden phlox emerges from the crown in mid-spring as reddish shoots and blooms in mid to late summer.
